Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker presents his music under many different banners: GB, Gifted &#38;amp; Blessed, The Abstract Eye, The Reflektor, Frankie Reyes, and Julian Abelar. While each project showcases a different facet of his being, they are all firmly rooted in Technoindigenous Studies—an ethos merging deep heritage with futurism. Modern Composition L.A. host Frosty visits GB in his Highland Park home to trace his musical evolution, how he’s been shaped by his native Los Angeles, and the perspective gained from distance. GB provides a vivid offering of music that showcases his balanced love of synthesizers and deep connection to nature. The episode culminates in the premiere of GB’s new composition “All These Neutrinos.”

On this installment of Modern Composition L.A., we spend some quality time with Mekala Session, a young drummer and musical polymath raised in the fold of the multi-generational Los Angeles jazz band Pan Afrikan People’s Arkesta. He now guides the outfit into the future while keeping the light of its founder Horace Tapscott shining bright. The episode caps off with the premiere of a brand new composition by Mekala for the band Yoni. On the way, we’ll hear the music that’s helped inform his community-rooted music mission.

Emily Lacy is a sound artist exploring the folk idiom from a space rooted in experimental music. With a background in film, Lacy plays with time and space to create powerful works documenting internal and external landscapes. Her output swings from the personal to the powerfully universal—oscillating between protest anthems to intimate poetics. Her performances and recordings reflect themes of social justice—utilizing vocal techniques such as shape singing and a capella, electronic music elements, constructed environments and physical recorded media. On this episode of Modern Composition L.A., Frosty visits Lacy’s studio to hear about her process-based practice. She shares a selection of music that’s impacted her greatly and unveils her new series of sonic paintings. The episode concludes with the premiere of a brand new work by Lacy.

On this round of Modern Composition L.A., we conduct a virtual visit to Celia Hollander’s Highland Park studio. With a visual art and architecture background, the Los Angeles native explores temporality through a painterly approach to the musical medium. Through digital audio manipulation she liquifies seemingly static sounds, unveiling infinite textural perspectives. For her appearance on this program, Hollander shares recordings from her ever-expanding discography, a mix of sonic influences, audio documentation of recent projects and the premiere of a brand new composition. This installment of Modern Composition L.A. brings us into Maral’s world. When the Iranian-American musician, producer, and DJ moved from Virginia to Los Angeles in 2014, she clicked with a music community that fostered the expansion of her adventurous nature. Navigating the city’s sonic subcultures, Maral encountered an experimental energy and sense of open exchange that has nourished her growth. 

The diversity of Los Angeles’ international musical cultures have also influenced her transportive sound impulses and amplified her own cultural roots. With its immense population of Iranian descent, Los Angeles gave Maral a direct portal into a wellspring of Persian classical, folk, and pop. She distills these modal jewels of melancholic beauty and sprinkles their spirits like essential oils into her recordings.

Maral’s debut album Push, out October 14, 2020 on Leaving Records, unifies her myriad sonic aesthetic into a single vessel. Crunchy club koans, hypnotic mantra-pop, tremor dub, and instinctive post punk merge in Maral’s sphere of deep feeling sound. On this Modern Composition L.A. episode, Maral shares some of her formative musical experiences within Los Angeles and beyond and a selections of the songs that propel her along, including the premiere of a new track to send us off soaring at the show’s end.

Micaela Tobin sings spells to shift us towards the light. She is dedicated to elevating marginalized voices and expanding experimental platforms through revolutionary modes of expression that challenge convention. Tobin’s White Boy Scream project merges her operatic background with a noise music practice honed to shatter stilted systems and reclaim sacred ground. 
On White Boy Scream’s album Bakunawa, she engaged in an examination of pre-colonization mythologies from the Philippines in order to collapse stagnant narratives and transcend oppressive, cyclical histories through creative reimaginings of her cultural folklore. A mesmerizing performer, Tobin is the rare artist who when setting out to embody a moon-eating serpent leaves the listener with no doubt that this possession has come to pass. White Boy Scream’s vocal incantations can oscillate from soul-wrenching to seductive in a single phrase, bringing new realities into being through her highly intentional utterances.
